- Kamala Devi Harris was born on the 20th of October 1964. She was born in Oakland, California and grew up in Berkeley.
- The daughter is of immigrants. She has a Jamaican father is an emeritus professor of Stanford University, and her mother was an investigator in the field of cancer from India. The couple were active within and participated in the Civil Rights movement before divorcing when Harris and her younger sister Maya were young.
- Her mother named her “Kamala” to pay homage to Harris’ Indian roots. The word “Kamala” means “lotus, ” a different name for Lakshmi, who is her name for the Hindu goddess of fortune, wealth beauty, love, Joy, and Prosperity.
- She earned a bachelor’s in economics and political science at Howard University where she was on the team for debate and an active member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. She received an law certificate through UC Hastings College of Law.
