  1. Kamala Devi Harris was born on the 20th of October 1964. She was born in Oakland, California and grew up in Berkeley.
  2. The daughter is of immigrants. She has a Jamaican father is an emeritus professor of Stanford University, and her mother was an investigator in the field of cancer from India. The couple were active within and participated in the Civil Rights movement before divorcing when Harris and her younger sister Maya were young.
  3. Her mother named her “Kamala” to pay homage to Harris’ Indian roots. The word “Kamala” means “lotus, ” a different name for Lakshmi, who is her name for the Hindu goddess of fortune, wealth beauty, love, Joy, and Prosperity.
  4. She earned a bachelor’s in economics and political science at Howard University where she was on the team for debate and an active member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. She received an law certificate through UC Hastings College of Law.
  5. Harris was San Francisco district attorney from 2004 until 2011 and was California Attorney General from 2011 to 2016.
  6. In 2017 she became the 2nd Black female and also the very first South Asian-American woman to be elected senator.
  7. With her degree earned from Howard University, Kamala Harris will become the very first Vice President who has graduated from an traditionally Black university. No president has graduated at an institution that is HBCU.
  8. Harris and lawyer Douglas Emhoff wed in 2014. According to the San Francisco Chronicle they had a date that was blind and got married at the Santa Barbara courthouse. Harris is also the stepmother of his two adult children, Cole and Ella, who refer to her as “Momala.”
